Activity included in the I Bienal – Arts Festival in Madeira de Paredes
100 years of José Saramago by Agostinho Santos
Fenabel is proud to be part of such an important project, where art and literature come together as one, and show the world all of the creative power we have inside our portuguese minds.
“The path of José Saramago (1922 – 2010) is marked by a strong sense of the improbable, becoming the only Nobel Prize for Literature in the Portuguese language (1998) and justifying it by the attention to popular expression, making a certain speech “without school ” the touchstone of a style that imposes itself on art and academia. Saramago, whose work is defined somewhat late, universalizes the Portuguese question and stands out for the important humanist focus that criticizes contemporaneity and its demagogues.
The work of Agostinho Santos (1960) has to do with insubmission and with a frontal exercise of citizenship. Interested in cutting ties and rediscovering the spontaneous language of those who obey only their own nature, he is committed to defending essential causes for the most attentive conscience of our days. His work at the service of his convictions clearly puts him in the wake of what has always been Saramago’s gesture. Both inscribe the crowd in their discourses, that of the oppressed or forgotten, of those who are passed over or postponed.
Agostinho’s meeting with Saramago took place in frank enthusiasm, but he left the challenge for the books on which the painter had not studied to still deserve this interpretation. This exhibition is Augustine’s response to Saramago’s request. The transformation of books into images continues, according to Augustine’s indomitable imagination. A way to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Saramago, a master and a mutual friend.” – Valter Hugo Mãe
